the social strategy

Today me and my friend got thinking about social hierarchy over a cup of coffee. Maybe this has been on my mind because of all the times I've had to meet new people and make friends, or maybe just because analyzing people is one of my favorite things.

Anyway, we're on the age when people start thinking about their social status. One thing is certain; it's different in every group you hang out in. Family, friends, hobbies, school. They all have a unique system for social relationships, some more humane than others. Based on my own (sometimes weird) way of thinking, we all have doubts about ourselves when we're dealing with others.

When meeting new people, we sometimes have to figure out a strategy of some kind. Should I just be myself, or should I change my behavior to fit in with people, or should I have a role. We don't necessarily always think about these things, but we do it automatically do make new contacts.

There are different groups everywhere; the highly respected group, people who are above others (for some usually insignificant reason), the normal group (usually stays out of the worst drama) and the lower group (who people either don't notice or don't really like). We can try to pretend these groups don't exist after High School, but we would just be lying to ourselves. However, as an 18-year-old High School-er  I can clearly see some of these groups in my life, but I'm glad to say that they're are not as clear as they were a few years ago. People have indeed gotten wiser. Still, sometimes I stop to think about my own status, and which group I'm in. It's hard to put yourself in box, and you can never really know how others see you, or even how you see yourself. I always ask myself "am I in the normal group or what".

It's like our social relationships are based on stairs. You can move from the lower stair; you can go higher, but your can also fall down after a major, major mistake. Thankfully, it's not usually this strict, and people can be very understanding with for example bad jokes or just bad looks, or other shallow stuff that may cause a shift in one's social stance. True friendships don't see the flaws.

These stairs are sometimes even a good thing; they help us find the people we want to hang out with. They can help us define ourselves and our stance. Even thought new situations might be a pain, after you get to know people, the awkward moments fade and good friendships arise. In the end, walking up and down those stairs is totally and definitely worth the effort.
